Warning of fraud treasures in card transactions

27/10/2025

Besides the strong development in technology, high-tech criminals also constantly change their methods of execution. Forms of fraud and fraud aimed at stealing information and appropriating money via bank cards are increasingly sophisticated and professional.

New and popular forms of fraud and scams today:

  1. Swapping the chip on the physical card: The subject takes advantage of the loophole when the customer gives the card to the cashier/other person to swap the real chip on the card with a fake chip of similar shape. The lost real chip is similar to losing/misplacing the card, but the customer is misunderstanding that he is still holding the real card and keeping the card in his hand. In fact, the customer is only holding the card blank without the actual chip. After that, the subject used the stolen real chip to perform chip card swipe transactions to appropriate customers’ money.
  2. Stealing information from e-wallets attached to devices like Apple Pay/ Samsung Pay/ Google Play: Subjects defrauding customers of providing card information and OTP to digitize cards on e-wallets, then performing consecutive high-value fraudulent transactions.
  3. Impersonating a bank employee: A person impersonating a bank employee approaches the cardholder to advise on increasing the credit card limit and card-related services. The subject will instruct you to access a fake link with an interface similar to the website of Vietnam Maritime Commercial Joint Stock Bank and then ask the cardholder to enter card information and OTP code. If the cardholder does so, the card information will be stolen and a transaction will be deducted from the card.
  4. Fake message from the bank: The subject sent a fake Short Message Service message in the message received from the bank to trick customers into accessing the fake link. Then ask to provide security information such as name, login password, OTP code, card information, etc. to appropriate money.

Vietnam Maritime Commercial Joint Stock Bank recommends a number of measures to secure card information:
